NC Machining Technology of Motor Metal Base Plane

The base plane of the motor is an important benchmark for the connection of the motor and the supporting equipment, which directly affects the accuracy of the connection and the smooth level of the operation. In general, motor base plane machining has two different process routes: Pre-marking is used as the basis of positioning, which is suitable for single production or large motor base processing. The special fixture is used for positioning, and the series of motors are used in batch production.

Two motor base plane processing solutions
1. In a motor seat machining scheme, when machining the plane of the base. To locate the processed end stop and end face, the motor base is pressed on the positioning tool by screw, U-shaped pressing iron (or platen). The distance and parallelism between the base plane and the axis of the motor base can be guaranteed by correcting the height position of the tool for locating the axis of the stop. When machining longer or heavier motor mounts, auxiliary support points must be added to reduce vibration during machining.

2. In another motor seat machining solution, the first step is to machine the base plane. Before the base plane is machined, the inner circumference of the motor base and the casting surface of the stop are not accurate or rough. Appropriate clamping methods must be adopted to ensure that the inner circle and the wall thickness around the stop are roughly uniform after the base plane is machined.
specific method: Firstly, the taper sleeve is used to roughly align the axis line of the motor base, then the screw jack is used to adjust the end and bottom of the motor base. Finally, the motor base is fixed by big nut, screw and three-point pressure plate.

In order to improve productivity, several motor bases are clamped on the working table at the same time when the base plane is machined on the gantry planer or the gantry milling machine.
Common base plane processing method:

● Planing.

The fixture and cutter used in processing the plane of the motor base with a Bull-Head planer are relatively simple. The plane of the base portion of the motor that is not machined is used as a rough reference surface. To find the position of the motor base with the level, the motor base must be clamped to avoid loosening due to machining stress or vibration. In order to ensure the high dimensional accuracy of the center of the motor base, the base plane is processed by two processes: coarse planing and fine planing. This type of processing method has low productivity and is rarely used in large batch production. For medium and large motor base, it is common to process base plane on gantry planer.

● Milling.
Milling the motor base plane on horizontal milling machines, vertical milling machines, portal milling machines and milling power heads is the most common method of machining.
Its processing is shown in the figure.
The inner circle positioning can be realized by positioning the spindle or by the stop tire 5, and the symmetry of the two bases can be corrected manually. For milling, a large diameter insert cutter is used, each cutting edge of the cutter is not at the same arc and at the same height. This allows roughing and finishing to be performed simultaneously, close to continuous cutting, without large vibrations, which can increase the amount of cutting.
The maximum amount of cutting is as follows: Cast iron parts can reach 5~6 mm, and steel castings can reach 3~4 mm. Usually, the base plane can be machined only once with a knife. The production efficiency is several times higher than planing, and the processing quality is also better.

When the batch size is large, the base plane is processed by a special milling machine, which is more productive. Some factories use a four-station dedicated iron bed to mill the base plane and can machine four workpieces simultaneously.

Boring.
The base plane of large motor is often cut on horizontal universal pipe bed. Two knives are mounted on the tube head, and the cutting edges of each knives are not at the same arc and at the same height. The processing properties are still intermittent cutting. Slight vibration when the amount of cutting is large. This processing method has high productivity and good quality.  Sometimes, the base plane of medium-sized motor base is also boring out.
